Update on Vinyl Panels

Our girls live in this little coop. It works very well in the spring, summer, and fall, but in the winter, I begin to feel sorry for them.

As you can see, their run is completely open.
The small nesting box/roosting area pictured is the only closed off area in the coop to protect from wind. I always end up wishing I had a barn that could shelter them better in the winter.
With building a barn not being one of my options, last year, I did a project and made vinyl panels to insert into each of the openings to help shield my girls from the wind/rain/snow.                              Click here to view that post.

I have had several questions about using these panels lately, and I thought I would address them here.
As you can see, these panels fit into the openings, and I attach them with plastic zip ties.
1.They are NOT, air tight.  Air still moves easily around the sides. It is still cold inside on really cold days. However, it usually feels slightly warmer because it blocks the constant wind.
2. One thing I really love about having these up, is the fact that they block a lot of blowing rain from getting inside these runs.
3. Another great thing is that on beautiful days like today, (it is 68 degrees here and sunny), I can snip those zip ties from the top, and drop them down to allow all the fresh air and breeze to blow through. Then, I can easily hook them back if it is going to get cold that night.
Winter set in early here this year. We hit 16 degrees last week one night, and several days didn’t get above freezing!

  1. It is better to lead from behind and to put others in
front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there
is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership. See the link below for more info.
