Valentine’s Fun on the Farm

I actually start getting ready for Valentine’s Day when the Christmas decor goes to the attic. While I’m putting away Christmas, I may as well get the Valentine decor down, right? I love simple touches throughout our home, on the porches and even in the cabin. Most of the time, I re-use what I have from year to year, with maybe just a few simple purchases made while I’m out and about, to change things up a bit. I have been pretty amazed at how retail shops don’t really get the Valentine pretties out until just a few weeks before, but when it comes to the other holidays like Easter, Halloween and Christmas, they are out months before! I guess some people don’t go all out for it, but I do enjoy making the home feel cozy, by enjoying all the reds, pinks and hearts, weeks before the day actually arrives.We spend a lot of time in the family room, so I always give it some extra love.  Last year, I used the red and white buffalo slip covers during the Christmas season, and left them on throughout the month of February. This year, I decided to use the white slipcovers for Christmas. I always add a few heart themed throw pillows throughout the room. The mantel is simply adorned with a heart banner, a Love sign, some candles and a white heart shaped plated that I have had for many years. I had so much fun decorating the old Hoosier cabinet this year with Valentine goodies. Aren’t the heart doilies cute hanging on the basket?  I love hearts, and enjoy using hearts in and around the home throughout the year.Here are some festive ways that I decorate the kitchen for the month of love. My Country Charm stove is one of the focal points in this room, and I always decorate around it. The other area I love decorating around is my farmhouse sink. My sink is one of the Artist Edition sinks that Kohler manufactures. I found this adorable egg “tree” several months ago and love it sitting by the sink to hold the eggs when they come in from the coop. I even decided to give it a little twinkle during Christmas and left them on for Valentine’s adding a cute little heart bow. The little boxwood window wreaths are by Ballard Designs. I purchased about six of these several years ago, and have used them for Christmas and the Valentine season. One of my favorite collections are these heart shaped plates by Johnson Brothers.On the bed in my bedroom are the same pink and white toile European squares that I used during Christmas. I simply added the sparkly heart pillows and it’s all done! The sitting room is the first thing you see when you enter the bedroom suite. I think it is the most romantic room in the house, and it is always fun to decorate it in pinks and whites!My cabin is always a treat to decorate for the holidays. You can still use some of the Christmas decorations, i.e. the tree can be changed up with some heart ornaments and cute heart lights. Gingham red bows still look cute placed in different areas throughout the room.One of my favorite new Valentine projects this year are my diy heart shaped boxwood wreaths. We simply took a straw wreath and added faux boxwood stems following the shape of the wreath, added a pretty bow and of course twinkle lights! Twinkle lights are great through the dark and dreary winter months!Oh, and lets’s not forget the food! Heart shaped cookies and chicken pies always hit the spot!
